As a parent/teacher tutoring those with dyslexia, no matter how amazing my children and students are stress and anxiety can be overwhelming. Just last night, my 18 year old was having anxiety...college applications, college essays, scholarship applications, mid-terms, all in the middle of being the captain of his Varsity basketball team mid-season with 3 and 4 games a week. This is stressful for anyone let alone someone who is profoundly dyslexic and needs more time for everything. Even more, he needs sleep and when he can't sleep and feels that tightness in his chest (anxiety) how is a parent, teacher, friend supposed to help? I know as his mother I just want to take the stress and anxiety away...make it stop for him. Unfortunately, as we all know it just doesn't work that way. I love this fact sheet from the International Dyslexia Association as it helps us to stop, breathe and make an action plan. Once we breathe and realize we can conquer whatever the problem is one step at a time the stress and anxiety can begin to dissipate slowly. Sometimes even naming and figuring out the main source of anxiety can help to gain power over it. Follow the "DE-STRESS" steps in this fact sheet to help you, or those you care for to overcome the stress related to their dyslexia.
